Working definition. Emergence is the appearance of coherent qualities at the level of a whole—qualities no component possesses by itself.
Inherited meaning
Biology, ecology, complexity theory, and philosophy use emergence to describe how interaction produces form: a flock, a market, a language, a mind. The term is sometimes misused as a mystical substitute for explanation; properly used, it directs attention to relations, feedback, and scale.
Meaning in the imagination economy
Human–machine systems generate effects that belong neither to a user nor a model alone. Cultures of use, shared prompts, incentives, interfaces, and institutional habits interact until new behaviour becomes normal. The relevant design object is therefore often the ecology, not the isolated output.
What changes in practice
Observe repeated interactions and second-order effects. Prototype with groups, not only individuals. When surprising behaviour appears, study the conditions producing it before praising or blaming a single component.
