Inherited meaning
The word literally carries the idea of working together, but industrial practice often shrank it into parallel labour coordinated by a plan. Artistic, scientific, and civic collaboration preserve a richer heritage: knowledge emerges between perspectives, not simply from adding their outputs.
Meaning in the imagination economy
With AI, “collaboration” is often used too casually for any interaction with a model. A system can be generative without being a moral or political partner. Human–machine collaboration is therefore asymmetric: the machine widens the field of proposals; the human community holds intention, disagreement, consent, and consequence. Human collaboration remains the place where different lived realities can revise the direction itself.
What changes in practice
Invite difference before the brief closes. Make reasons visible, not just preferences. Preserve the right to challenge the goal, not merely improve the execution. If nobody’s understanding changed, the work was coordinated—not collaborated.
