Working definition. Worldbuilding composes the relations that make a world: its values, infrastructures, rituals, conflicts, language, ecology, and ordinary life.
Inherited meaning
The practice is familiar from myth, literature, cinema, games, architecture, and political movements. Its power never lay only in invented scenery. A world feels real when its parts constrain and imply one another, and when people inside it have lives beyond the author’s plot.
Meaning in the imagination economy
After AI, vivid surfaces are cheap. The demanding work is coherence and desirability. Worldbuilding becomes a civic method for turning abstract futures into shared environments that can be inhabited, contested, and revised. It helps groups move from forecasting what might happen to authoring what they are willing to help happen.
What changes in practice
Begin with a changed relationship, not a visual style. Follow its consequences into work, education, care, power, time, and daily ritual. Invite others to locate contradictions and excluded lives. End with one present institution or behaviour that would have to change.
