Inherited meaning
Ecology associates diversity with resilience; democratic and justice movements insist that institutions represent lives historically excluded from power. The term becomes weak when presence is counted while norms, authority, and belonging remain unchanged.
Meaning in the imagination economy
AI can widen access while compressing expression toward dominant statistical patterns. Diversity matters not as a decorative range of outputs, but as protection against monoculture in data, teams, evaluation, and imagined futures. Plurality goes further by allowing differences to remain irreducible rather than merely included.
What changes in practice
Count who is present, then examine who influences the brief, defines quality, and can disagree safely. Preserve difference through decision-making, not only representation.
