Working definition. Self-awareness is awareness turned toward the position from which one is acting. It makes the observer part of the observation.
Inherited meaning
Philosophical self-knowledge, contemplative inquiry, psychology, and reflective practice all treat self-awareness as more than introspection. The self becomes visible through emotion, body, habit, relation, and the responses one evokes in others.
Meaning in the imagination economy
Generative systems mirror language and intention back with unusual fluency. This can deepen reflection or inflate the user’s unexamined frame. Self-awareness is what lets a director notice when the machine is amplifying vanity, fear, inherited bias, or a desire for certainty.
What changes in practice
Before accepting an output, ask what in you wanted this answer. Seek feedback from people outside the frame, record changed judgments, and treat discomfort as possible information rather than immediate error.
