Inherited meaning
Philosophy of mind, psychology, and contemplative traditions investigate awareness as consciousness of inner and outer life. Although theories differ, the practical distinction remains useful: awareness receives a field; attention gives part of it emphasis.
Meaning in the imagination economy
AI systems can detect signals and model contexts, but calling that awareness imports assumptions about experience the performance alone cannot establish. Human awareness matters here as the ground from which values, felt consequences, and genuine concern become possible.
What changes in practice
Widen the field before narrowing the task. Notice body, environment, relationship, and absence alongside explicit information. Do not confuse a system’s responsiveness with evidence that it experiences what it processes.
