Working definition. Direction is the capacity to say what should exist: to originate an intention, commit it to a form that work can act on, and remain answerable for the choice.
Inherited meaning
The word carries both senses the capacity needs. A direction is a bearing — the navigator's committed heading, fixed before the moving starts and corrected against reality as the water changes. And direction is the act of directing — the film director answering a thousand small questions by holding one intention steady enough that others can work inside it. Both inheritances agree on the essential point: direction is not motion. It is the choice of which motion, made on the record.
Meaning in the imagination economy
Once execution is abundant, direction is what the machines leave undone. A generative system will produce candidates for anything and choose the purpose of nothing; it answers every brief and originates none. That makes direction the binding constraint — the step everything downstream waits on — and the clearest line between the work being automated and the work being concentrated.
Direction is not preference, and it is not a wish. A preference is discovered after the options arrive; direction exists before them and is what the options are for. A wish states a want and leaves the shaping to someone else; direction commits — to this future rather than that one, at a resolution that can fail.
The trainable decomposition
At working scale, direction decomposes into the five capacities: specificity of articulation, comparative judgement, reference fluency, constraint design, and iteration discipline. Each is separable and trainable, and the weakest binds the rest. Director mode is the posture; the five are its musculature.
What changes in practice
Write the want yourself, before there is anything to react to — an intention formed by choosing among a machine's proposals is a preference wearing direction's clothes. State it so that candidates can fail it. Compare before closing, then close on the record: a direction that was never committed cannot be corrected, only drifted from. And when the field genuinely changes, re-set the bearing deliberately rather than letting the work discover the change for you.
