Working definition. A mindset is a durable pattern of interpretation. It is the frame through which a situation appears as threat, material, invitation, proof, or possibility.
Inherited meaning
Psychology popularised mindset as beliefs about whether abilities are fixed or developable. Management culture often weakened it into compulsory optimism. A serious account includes history, emotion, power, and habit: mindsets are embodied ways of meeting the world, not slogans placed over it.
Meaning in the imagination economy
The central shift after AI is from maker mindset to director mindset—from proving value through execution to creating value through intention, comparison, and judgment. This does not mean abandoning craft. It means relocating identity from “I performed every step” to “I can answer for the direction and the whole.”
What changes in practice
Notice the sentence that closes possibility: “That is not my role,” “the machine should know,” “more output will fix it.” Replace it with a testable question. Change the rituals and incentives around the person too; mindset cannot carry a system designed for the opposite behaviour.
