Across a field of generated candidates there is a line. Below it everything is competent and none of it is right. Above it a candidate registers as the one — not because it scores highest on any stated criterion, but because it matches an intention the maker had not fully articulated until they saw it met.
The line is real, it is personal, and it moves with experience. It is also the reason the new question is not how but which.
Why it resists measurement
Recognition is not preference and it is not quality. A practitioner can prefer one candidate and recognise another, and will choose the second. Any measurement that collapses the two has measured the wrong thing.
