Working definition. Freedom is both freedom from domination and freedom to act, relate, create, and become within a world shared with others.
Inherited meaning
Political philosophy distinguishes liberty from interference, capability to pursue a life, and collective self-government. Each reveals a different failure: choices are not meaningful when coercion, deprivation, or exclusion determines them in advance.
Meaning in the imagination economy
AI may remove barriers while quietly narrowing agency through defaults, prediction, dependency, and invisible persuasion. More options do not guarantee more freedom. A positive future expands people’s real ability to understand the system, choose otherwise, and help govern the structures shaping them.
What changes in practice
Test whether people can refuse, leave, modify, and contest. Distribute capability rather than only convenience. Evaluate freedom at the least powerful position in the system.
